The herd lands are a wide expanse of mostly flat desert, interrupted by large rocky formations. Prairie grass and purple sage grow rampant. If the rains are adequate, cliffroses, snakewood, brittlebush, and rabbitbrush color the red sands. Few trees take root in the dry landscape but cottonwoods and junipers grow near shallow pools of water that collect in the lowlands after recent rains. Red-tailed hawks and tree sparrows claim the skies while coyotes, mountain lion and the occasional fox stalk jackrabbits and cottontails below. The land is home to many snakes and lizards the more notable being numerous kinds of rattlesnakes.
