Winter. It was making it's self known bit by bit every day here in the river valley. The harsh heat that once ruled this arid land, was being taken over by the winter solstice. The cold air that came off the mountain range swept down into the valley, and brought a hard cold with it. Early mornings, what moisture that was in the air, was turned to frost on the landscape; from the tips of dormant aspen branches, and the spruce, and ponderosa pines, to the red rocks, and trickling river banks, winter was leaving its touch everywhere. The suns rays peeked over the horizon, revealing an over cast sky glistening on the winterized scenery. It made way for a new day, and who knew what it would bring on the Gila!
Long silvery white tresses were drawn up by the cold north wind, dancing and whirling about over the silver grullo's dark brown orbs as he surveyed his surroundings, auds flicked to and fro listening to any new sounds on the wind. He spotted his half sister Tadewi, on the distant horizon grazing on the winter scrub. It was just he two of them here right now, he hoped to pull more into their herd over the winter. Many of his sons and daughters had moved onto other herds, or had become loners, and traveled abroad. Same with most of his own sister's children, though one they knew of, still hung around the region, but never really socialized with them. She had a fiery spirit in which she never liked to settle in one place. The herd mares that once roamed these lands, they'd been taken by a neighboring rival stallion, back when his aging father ruled these lands, and lost his life during the fight trying to keep them. Cheveryo planned to make a comeback in honor of his father, it was just a matter of timing.
He raised his head high, and let a nicker float out on the wind to his sister, beckoning for her to join him at the river for a morning drink. He tread lightly on the path to the river, hooves leaving their mark on a fresh blanket of snow that dusted the desert floor beneath him. He came to the river bank edge, it was crusted with a thin layer of ice, the trickling water flowed beneath it. He rose a hoof up, and struck at the ice, making himself a decent sized hole to drink out of. Not waiting any longer, to dipped his lips down to the frigid waters for a drink.
The grullo appaloosa mare's auds flicked, and head rose up, as she heard her brother's calling for her. She chewed on the mouthful of dry grass she had, and swallowed it. Licking her lips the need for a drink after all that dry grass, the cool river water would be welcomed right now. She turned her body, and headed for her brother.
The cool crisp air had the young girl feeling frisky. Hindquarters soared in the air as she gave a few bucks, thunder roared from beneath her bodice as she made her way across the lands. Her name was Anevay, and she had been living as a longer for nearly three years now. The young mare had adapted well to being alone, unlike many others. She proudly wore the craw marks of a cougar on her right shoulder. The cat had pounced out of no where on her, and luckily.. Anevay was able to fight him off. But that didn't really mean anything - she was still prey to them. All equine were prey to the large cats.
As the mare came to a hault, twin towers perked. She had heard a call from something, from someone... What?. No one had been near for months. Anevay use to see herds as she passed, but now it seemed they became more and more scares. Her mind pondered for a moment before allowing her limbs to carry her closer and closer. She stopped on a hill once more as she looked around.. Not seeing anymore at the time. Flared nostrils snorted, arching her nape. Anevay pawed at the ground before letting out a small whicker herself.

Tadewi approached her brother, and was about ready to take in a few gulps of water as she heard the sound of a strangers nicker float on the breeze. Cheveyo's head picked up, and looked around him in a bit of a wary state. Not seeing or smelling who it was right off the bat made him that way. It could have been someone looking to challenge him for these lands, or some one looking to join. Who knew.
Dark brown orbs scanned the horizon, he puffed himself up look bigger, and he let out an intensely loud nicker into the sky. Whether it'd be a foe or a new friend, he was going to let his presence be known to this stranger, that this was his territory. Hooves pulled themselves out of the river bank, and his silvery grullo dun bodice moved in the direction he felt he'd heard the voice come from.
Tadewi watched her brother, she was on edge was well. Who could it possibly be? It wasn't right for any of her own children. She just hoped this was a friendly equine coming to them. She hung back to let her brother go investigate, while she settled in and got her morning drink of water, and waited anxiously.
Getting out past the gully the river sat in, Cheveyo's dark eyes spotted the source of which the voice had come from at the top of a small hill. His form relaxed and gave a much better welcoming greeting to the dunskin painted woman. "You put me on quite a high alert. Haven't had much for visitors to the Gila in a long time." He called to her. As he approached, his brown eyes tool in her features, very beautiful woman she was indeed. "Welcome to the Gila. I am Cheveyo, heard leader of this territory." He said to her.
ice optics laid on the grulla colored stud; twin towers swivled as she listened to him. Anevay wasnt sure if she was ready to have company just yet; for months she was aloner... but then again; she was turning three - which ment the bachelors would be running her ragged soon, and it would be nice to get away from being 'prey' for once. lips turned into a grin, dial dipped for a moment good day sir Cheveyo; they call me anevay - it is a pleasure to meet you.. she stopped for a moment "do excuse me if i am trespassing" she added. optics left him and moved towards the mare in the distance, the dun mare shifted her weight around and cocked her hind hoof. awaiting for the stud to reply.

"Welcome Anevay... welcome to my home." He said. His velvet kissers pulled up in a small smile. "My grandfather always said that, as long as another means no harm to your home, they're no trespasser. And with it being the time of the year it is, you should be hospitable to a guest in your home." He said to her. There was plenty of grazing and water here, so there was no need for her to rush off. He saw her attention go off into the distance where his sister was. "That would be my sister Tadewi down there." He said to her. He then raised his head up to and called for her to come join them.
Tadi lifted her head from the water, as she heard her brothers call. Things had been quiet as she waited to find out what was going on. And woth her brother calling her, it must have been all right. She licked the water off her lips, and she trekked forward toward her brother and this unknown horse. She up out of the gully, moving at a brisk pace toward the pair on the hill. Her eyes watced the painted dunskin mare. "Hello." She greeted. "This is Anevay.. Cheveyo said, starting introductions. Tadi nodded as her brother spoke. "Pleasure Anevay. I'm Tadewi, as in sire my brother had said." She said to her. "Will you be staying with us for a while?" She asked.
